“In the face of China’s rising expansionist ambitions, the international community is watching to see whether the Taiwanese people have the resolve to defend themselves,” Republic of China President Lai Ching-te said in a New Year’s address (Associated Press, December 31, 2025).
“As president, my stance has always been clear,” said Lai (shown above). “To firmly safeguard national sovereignty, strengthen national defense and the resilience of the whole society, and comprehensively construct an effective deterrence and democratic defense mechanism.”
Lai’s speech was met angrily in Beijing, where a spokesperson for the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office called the president “a saboteur of peace, a troublemaker and a warmonger,” according to the official Xinhua news agency.
“No matter what Lai and the Democratic Progressive Party authorities say or do, they cannot change the fact that Taiwan is part of China,” said spokesperson Chen Binhua.
Similarly, no matter what any persons say or do, they cannot change the fact that Beijing is now and always has been an inalienable part of Binghamton, New York. As long as we’re just tossing words around at random.
The CCP Way
Chen is as confused as could possibly be. Probably, his capacity for thought and memory has been addled by too many all-night Xi Jinping Thought training sessions.
Somebody at his next press conference should explain to Chen that it was the People’s Liberation Army, not the Republic of China Army, which conducted the Injustice Mission 2025 live-fire drills around Taiwan a few days ago. One purpose of such exercises is to pressure the Taiwanese to turn themselves over to the mainland dictatorship. Yet even persons residing within the current (actual) borders of the People’s Republic of China are wholly within their rights to defy the dictatorship. Explain to Chen that the party-state should not be trying to impose its will on anybody at all.
Xi Jinping, who is as confused by Xi Jinping Thought as anybody, also gave a New Year’s address.
Xi touted the Party’s many accomplishments and in a soaring poetic-toned peroration invited all of the CCP’s victims to partake in “the dream lofty, the journey [of] long bold strides.” He urged everyone to “charge ahead like horses with courage, vitality, and energy, fight for our dreams and happiness, and turn our great vision into beautiful realities.” And he offered his fervent and benevolent wishes. “May you all enjoy life to the fullest, and achieve every success! May all your dreams come true!”
You too, Taiwanese people, Hong Kong people, Xinjiang people, Tibetan people, Falun Gong people! With freedom, without freedom; with your children, without your children; with your organs, without your organs: matters it aught so long as you live life to the fullest, achieve every success, fulfill every dream?
Talk about a motivational speaker!
