Periodically, religious persons who are subject to the Chinese Communist Party’s oversight and repression are harangued about the importance of loving Big Brother and toeing the Party line.
Thus we learn that at an early January 2026 meeting led by Karma Tsetan, chairman of the “so-called Tibet Autonomous Region,” and by the CCP official Wang Jinzhang, monks were ordered to work for the sinicization of Tibetan Buddhism (The Tibet Post, January 9, 2026).
This meeting compelled Tibetan monks to work towards the “sinicisation of Tibetan Buddhism”, and strive diligently to make Tibetan Buddhism compatible with socialism. They also ordered the monks to follow the “orders of the Party”, “be grateful for the CCP,” and “follow the Party.”…
[The CCP] often prevents Tibetan monks from praying for their spiritual leader in exile, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and bans books, teachings and portraits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. If Tibetans, including monks, are found in possession of such items, they face detention, torture and imprisonment….
“Representatives of the religious sector must sincerely follow the Party’s orders, be grateful for CCP and remain loyal to it. They must actively develop a sense of belonging to the Chinese nation and work towards socialist modernisation,’ said Wang Jinzhang….
The Chinese authorities also demand [that] the monks cease all contact with family members in exile and sever all ties with their spiritual leaders in exile….
The dictionary says that to “sinicize” is “to modify by Chinese influence.” The meaning as thus defined is broad. The modification could be good, bad, or neutral. If you prefer Chinese food to Italian, your diet has been sinicized.
As the term “sinicization” is used by the Party, it more specifically refers to a process of altering any practices or ideas that are incompatible with Chinese Communist Party doctrine and dictates until they are completely compatible with Party doctrine and dictates. Sinicization is indoctrination. It is an attempt to force people to become part of a hive mind as dramatized by the assimilations into a collective One conducted by the Borg in “Star Trek” and The Others in “Plur1bus.”
The big difference between such fictions and reality is that although the Party can often compel people to mouth collectivist nonsense and prevent them from doing what they want to do, it cannot compel them to actually accept Party doctrines in the privacy of their own still separate and individual minds. Even the truest of true believers may, if their faculty of cognition is not entirely rotted out, have doubts, which they work hard to suppress.
