I doubt that anyone has ever accused Congressman Rho Khanna, Democrat, the most communist anti-communist member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, of being the sharpest knife in the drawer. If anyone has, though, that person is being embarrassed once again by the latest Khannanian initiative conducted under the Select Committee’s all-too-forgiving aegis.
AI moguls recently announced, or reannounced but with more traction this time, that mankind is doomed unless their firms’ development of misnamed artificial intelligence (it’s software) is subjected to globally enforced slowdown and third-party monitoring. Otherwise, say the CEOs, their too-quickly-improving AI models will possibly kill all mankind. Soon. If not sooner. Sure, their software engineers install safeguards and whatnot. But things are just happening so fast. There’s just no way that the CEOs can act on their own to make their companies’ models as safe as they need to be. Not at this speed. Somebody must stop us before we program again, they say.
Perhaps there is a problem here that does need to be addressed. Certainly, if it is not already illegal to be so careless that you accidentally destroy mankind, such criminal negligence should be outlawed pronto. Let’s agree on that much at least.
Khanna’s hearing
These urgent IPO-eve warnings about AI models plus an impending Trump-Xi summit make this the perfect time for a mastermind to convene an “Emergency Hearing Calling for U.S.-China AI Agreement.”
Not a hearing to call on China to agree to stop stealing from American AI models (“false accusations and smearing,” per the CCP). Nor to stop cyberattacking our communications and utilities infrastructure (“false narrative,” “smear”). Rather, we are talking about an agreement—with the Chinese Communist Party, with the People’s Republic of China—to work together to “responsibly pace the development of AI and to address the shared risks, like loss of control and misalignment.”
The September 23 hearing “will give members of the Committee an opportunity to question leading AI researchers and safety experts about the risks of AI, best practices in AI governance, and the path forward toward binding international safeguards to ensure safety and human control of this technology.”
CCP spokesmen have already dismissed calls to slow the pace of development of the AI models they’re looting, calling these calls fear mongering. They might have said, instead, “That’s right, bring on the global regulators, with China in charge! Let’s emulate the UN model here! Happy future together! Right on!” Not too late. Khanna’s hearing gives the CCP a chance to take the lead on this front.
AI safety is fine as a topic. This topic could be explored in a hearing. Congressional hearings on important matters are one way to get information. They also publicize things that may be worth publicizing. But how does this particular topic fall within the purview of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party? The CCP is not interested in protecting and strengthening American tech but in assaulting and undermining it.
Induct Xi?
But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe the thing to do is get PRC dictator Xi Jinping on board as a member or even co-chairman of the U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. Maybe he’ll give fellow committee members some tips on how to counteract the CCP’s malevolent influence and aggression. He’s got all the inside dope on these matters.
So hold the hearing on September 23 and make sure a Chinese-language transcript is prepared in time to hand Xi Jinping a copy before he leaves Washington DC on September 25.
