Sarah Wynn-Williams: “I saw Meta executives repeatedly undermine US national security and betray American values.”
Wynn-Williams is the author of a memoir about her time as a Meta executive and Mark Zuckerberg’s years-long effort to bring Facebook to China. She has been testifying before Congress about how “Meta worked ‘hand in glove’ with China on censorship, betrayed US” (India Today, April 13, 2025).
Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former global public policy director at Facebook, testified at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing on Wednesday that Meta executives prioritised profits over safety and US interests….
She alleged that Meta, formerly Facebook, gave the Chinese Communist Party access to user data, including that of Americans. When engineers flagged potential data security risks, company leadership—including CEO Mark Zuckerberg—reportedly showed little concern.
Wynn-Williams also claimed that Facebook and Instagram, Meta’s popular social networking platforms, aided Beijing in developing censorship tools.
“Mark Zuckerberg pledged himself a free speech champion. Yet I witnessed Meta working hand in glove with the Chinese Communist Party to construct and test custom-built censorship tools that silenced and censored their critics,” she said.
Meta spokesman Ryan Daniels claims that Wynn-Williams’s testimony is “divorced from reality and riddled with false claims.” The news report also repeats his fascinating statement that “While Mark Zuckerberg himself was public about our interest in offering our services in China and details were widely reported beginning over a decade ago, the fact is this: we do not operate our services in China today.”
Wynn-Williams has not been claiming that Meta currently operates in China.
